Wrong Number Sends Wrong Man to Drill
Leonard Smith needs a job, so when the city called him this week for an emergency meeting, he came running.
As it turned out, someone had the wrong number.
Smith, 38, an unemployed electronics technician, was awakened by a caller who said: “Len, you’ve got to report to 200 Orange St. this morning by 7:30. The chief administrator has set it up.”
Smith drove to the address, but once there he found that the Leonard Smith who was supposed to be at the mobilization drill was the city engineer. City officials found the number in the phone book but had neglected to check and make sure they had the correct one.
Smith said he knew it might be a mistake, but he had applied for a job and hoped this might be an interview.
