U.S. Team Loses World League Semifinal

The Olympic bronze medal-winning U.S. men’s volleyball team dropped a 15-10, 15-11, 15-10 decision to Italy in the World League semifinal Friday in Genoa, Italy. The loss was the team’s first in three 1992 matches against the two-time defending world champions.

Outside hitter Scott Fortune led the U.S. with 21 kills and four blocks. Middle blockers Doug Partie and Bob Samuelson (five blocks) each had 17 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Amy McMahon had nine kills and Liz Gunsaulus and Jennifer Loftus each had eight as the University of San Diego swept Cal State Fullerton, 15-8, 15-6, 15-6, in the first round of the Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine. The Toreras improved to 2-1; the Titans are 0-1.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 15-7, 16-14, and Western New Mexico, 15-7, 14-16, 15-9, then fell to Southern Oregon, 3-15, 15-6, 15-11 in pool play in the Christ College Irvine Labor Day tournament. The Crusaders are 2-1.

MEN’S SOCCER

Bryan Bradbury scored the game’s only goal as UC San Diego defeated host Biola, 1-0.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Carlsbad High’s Vanessa Nygaard will receive a proclamation from the County Board of Supervisors Tuesday after being named to the 15-player AAU/USA 16-under All-American team. Nygaard led the San Diego Police Athletic League’s select team to a ninth-place finish at the 48-team national tournament in Clovis, N.M., this summer.
