BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Vote for Vincent Is Cast by Butler

Brett Butler, one of the Dodgers’ most active players union members, voiced his support for embattled baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent on Friday.

“I feel sad for him,” Butler said. “I think he’s the best thing that’s happened to baseball since Kennesaw Mountain Landis.

“Here we have a man who genuinely wants to do what is best for baseball, and I guess (the owners) don’t want to let him do it,” Butler said.

“Just look at realignment, what does the commissioner have to gain by it? Nothing,” Butler said. “But he did it because it was good for baseball. That’s all he cares about is baseball.”

After getting his fourth hit in his fourth major league at-bat in the second inning Friday, Mike Piazza finally made an out in the fourth inning when he was struck out by Randy Tomlin. During a ninth-inning rally, Piazza drew a walk against Roger Mason after falling behind 1-and-2. “I had to somehow find the perseverance to stay back, because I was swinging at bad pitches,” Piazza said. “I have the feeling I will see a lot of pitches like that up here until I make them throw me strikes.”

Tom Candiotti will start Sunday, as expected, against Danny Jackson. The only other time Candiotti has pitched at Three Rivers Stadium, he gave up one run in seven innings and lost, 1-0. . . . It appears that Ramon Martinez will skip at least one more start because of his elbow problem. . . . Dave Anderson, who is eligible to come off the disabled Sunday after recovering from a strained right hamstring, is expected to be available next week to replace injured Jose Offerman.
