Buena High School and Rio Mesa High School boosters raised nearly $17,000 for their schools by selling food at this year’s Strawberry Festival in Oxnard, officials said Monday.
The money--raised at the event on May 15 and 16--will be used to buy new band uniforms and instruments and equipment for the athletic teams.
The Buena High School Marching Band Booster Club earned nearly $15,000, about 20% of the Ventura band’s annual budget, by selling strawberry funnel cakes at $4.50 each.
Lynn Mays of the Buena boosters said most of the money they raised will be used to buy new uniforms for the band’s color guard, four new euphoniums and one new mellophone.
The Rio Mesa High School Athletic Booster Club raised about $2,000 by selling strawberry pizza. The majority of the money will be used to buy uniforms, bats, balls and other equipment, said Laurie Contreras, a member of the Rio Mesa group.
Both schools have been selling food at the annual festival for about five years.
“We raise a big hunk of our budget there,” Mays said.
