Glendale : Alex Theatre Restoration

A nonprofit board charged with the restoration and operation of the Alex Theatre is working with a Pasadena company to develop a programming plan for the historic theater when it opens in a year as a cultural arts center.

Glendale officials said the nine-member Alex Regional Theatre board is negotiating with Theatre Corp. of America to develop plans for the Alex, 216 N. Brand Blvd. Theatre Corp. operates the Pasadena Playhouse and provides programming for theaters in Santa Barbara and San Diego.

The Glendale Redevelopment Agency is expected to award a contract this month for the proposed $6.2-million restoration project. Work could begin by late October.

Laurence R. Clarke, who led a citizens committee that developed the Alex restoration plan, has been elected chairman of the board. Other officers are John Hedlund, vice chairman, Mary Hamilton, treasurer, and Andrea Humberger, secretary.
