LYNWOOD : 17-Year-Old Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Mother
A Lynwood woman was killed by her 17-year-old son in an incident that Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputies described as a domestic dispute but family members insisted was an accident.
The youth, whose name was being withheld, was arrested Wednesday for the murder of 42-year-old Maria Galvez, according to sheriff’s Deputy Pat Hauser.
The boy initially called 911 to report that he found his mother in their Walnut Street house at about 6:40 p.m. Investigators thought she had been killed in a robbery, but physical evidence contradicted the boy’s account.
Officers concluded that the boy shot his mother because of a weeklong dispute, Hauser said.
George Careaga, Galvez’s brother, said the boy told him Wednesday morning that he was showing his mother his stepfather’s gun when it accidentally went off. Out of fear, the boy threw away the gun and told authorities it was a robbery, Careaga said.
