S.D. Skier Dies in New Zealand Blizzard
The body of a San Diego skier who died during a blizzard was recovered Thursday from Mt. Hutt, 24 hours after he was reported missing.
Mark Alwyn Hale, 41, a company director, was on a ski trip in Methven with his wife, Maria.
His body was recovered by a helicopter, Methven police Constable Roger Harris said. It was located Wednesday night, but bad weather forced rescue personnel to leave it on the mountain overnight.
Conditions had been “extremely hazardous” and Hale was skiing in an unpatrolled area, Mt. Hutt Ski Area general manager Jim Collins said.
