Hathaway Children’s Facility Receives $49,000

Hathaway Children’s Services has received $49,000 raised at a May 16 benefit gala sponsored by the Hathaway auxiliary. Co-chairs were Geri Hurley and Mary Ferrara. Hathaway, a residential treatment facility for abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children, recently opened a Family Resource Center in Highland Park to provide early intervention for troubled families and children.

Love Is Feeding Everyone received $20,000 from the Telephone Pioneers of America, Los Amigos Chapter No. 28, to support a food distribution program in South-Central Los Angeles. The donation represents contributions from Telephone Pioneers and Pacific Bell and AT&T; employees.

Hospice in the Home, dedicated to providing in-home nursing care and emotional guidance for terminally ill people and their families, announced net proceeds of $63,000 at its recent golf classic. Countrywide Funding Corp. sponsored the event for the second consecutive year. Actor McLean Stevenson was celebrity host at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Alzheimer’s Assn. has announced a $270,000 grant to be shared between Dr. Lon S. Schneider of USC School of Medicine and Dr. Betty L. Chang of the UCLA School of Nursing. The grant will fund studies aimed at improving the lives of Alzheimer’s victims. Schneider’s study, “A Clinical Trial of Carbamazepine in Agitated Alzheimer’s Disease Outpatients,” will be conducted over a three-year period. Chang’s study, entitled “Caregiver Interventions to Enhance Self-Care in Persons with Dementia,” is aimed at helping victims become more self-reliant.

Free Arts for Abused Children netted $55,000 at its sixth annual “Moonlight Roundup,” July 18 at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. The group provides healing through creative arts to victims of child abuse. Rafer Johnson was master of ceremonies. Co-hosts were Marty Lashenick and Susan Maiorano.

The Center for the Partially Sighted has announced receipt of a $10,000 gift from McDonnell Douglas Employees Community Fund. The gift will provide training for the severely visually impaired in grooming and cooking skills and personal financial management. The center’s focus is on the enhancement of usable vision through specialized treatment, education and research.

Victor Goodhill Ear Center, Division of Head and Neck Surgery, UCLA Medical Center, received $25,000 from the Hope for Hearing Foundation. The gift will fund research in hearing disorders.

Boy Scouts of America, Los Angeles area council, netted $56,000 at a June 18 event at the Beverly Hilton. Victor Franco, public relations manager for the Irwindale-based Miller Brewing Co., was honored with the Jimmy Stewart Good Turn Award. Proceeds will be used for Scouting programs.

Los Angeles Regional Foodbank, a private nonprofit charitable distributor of surplus food to the needy, was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Los Angeles Employees of Delta Airlines. The contribution has been earmarked for families in riot-torn areas of Los Angeles.
