A federal grand jury in Los Angeles has charged 20 suspects with participating in a narcotics trafficking operation that allegedly imported more than three tons of cocaine, acting U.S. Atty. Terree A. Bowers announced Thursday.

The 18-count indictment alleges that the organization had ties to Bolivia and Mexico. Prosecutors said that agents from the U.S. Customs Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and an array of local police and sheriff’s departments cooperated in the 1 1/2-year investigation. Agents reportedly seized 1,161 kilograms of cocaine in Tucson and another 744 kilograms in Acton, Calif.

The defendants, who each face possible life sentences, are scheduled to be arraigned in federal court Monday.
