Hearing Set on Mobil Pipeline Proposal

The Culver City Council will hold a public hearing Monday on Mobil Oil Corp.’s proposal to run a pipeline through the city.

Mobil is replacing a 92.4-mile pipeline stretching from oil fields near Bakersfield to its refinery in Torrance.

The new pipeline will enter Culver City at Venice and Sepulveda boulevards and continue for 2.7 miles before leaving the city at Centinela Boulevard, said City Engineer Jim Davis. The 16-inch diameter pipeline will have the capacity to carry 93,000 gallons of crude oil per day.

Major sections of the pipeline have already been laid in the Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County.

Culver City is the only municipality along the pipeline route that has not yet approved the project. The city could earn up to $70,000 a year in franchise fees if it signs a franchise agreement with Mobil Oil.

The city is working to ensure the safety of residents, and to address traffic disruption during construction of the pipeline, Davis said.

The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 4095 Overland Ave.
