PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Ellard Watches Streak Tick Away

Share

Receiver Henry Ellard said that he knew during the fourth quarter of the Rams’ 14-0 victory over New England that his team-record 81-game reception streak was about to end.

“I have to admit it was a little disappointing, especially in a game like that,” Ellard said Monday. “I think there were a lot of things that were open where it could have been done.

“But the situation we were in, it was great to get the win. I’ll take that any day over continuing the streak.

“It was something I tried not to think about, but as the game went on, time was flicking by, you can’t help but think about it and wondering what’s going to happen.

“In the early parts, you’re thinking, ‘Well, it’s a long game, there’s a chance I’ll still get the pass.’ But once you get into that fourth quarter and all of a sudden the time starts ticking down.

“I knew I pretty much wasn’t going to get a chance to get a ball, and I just let it go at that.”

Ellard said he remembered only one pass being thrown his way as the Rams tried several offensive sets that had neither Ellard nor Flipper Anderson on the field.

No. 1 pick Sean Gilbert, who suffered a sprained left ankle during the second quarter Sunday and did not return to the game, participated in Monday’s light workout, but Coach Chuck Knox said that his status for Sunday’s game in Miami is uncertain. Gilbert suffered a similar injury to the same ankle during training camp, forcing him to sit out the first two exhibitions.

Kicker Tony Zendejas, who missed 47-, 39- and 25-yard field-goal attempts Sunday, ending his streak of 23 field goals, took some extra kicking work after Monday’s workout. “There isn’t much anybody can say to him about that,” Knox said. “It’s just something he’s got to work through.”
