Glendale : Grant for Oil Disposal
The California Integrated Waste Management Board has awarded Glendale a $75,000 grant for a one-year pilot program in which the city will pick up used oil from residents.
The curbside service, to begin in January, is expected to collect about 5,000 gallons of oil currently disposed of illegally in the city each year down drains, in rear yards or into the trash, said Vasken Demirjian, a city hazardous materials supervisor. Details are not complete, but the plan is for residents to arrange for pickup by calling the city.
Since April, the city has accepted oil, paint, chemicals, pesticides and other household hazardous wastes at its Environmental Management Center, 780 Flower St., which is open the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Glendale is among 19 cities and counties awarded $840,057 in grants by the waste board.
