Proposition 13 Aftereffects

Share

“Personal responsibility” is a major campaign theme of both parties this election year. It’s time that California taxpayers assumed some personal responsibility of their own.

While I disagree with much of the recently enacted state budget, I do support the reduction in the Prop. 13 bailout of local governments. It is long overdue. The bailout has allowed local governments (and local taxpayers) to avoid the results of implementing Prop. 13.

Taxpayers must accept the fact that when taxes are reduced, so are the services and benefits they receive from government. There is no free lunch.

Voters should decide if they are willing to forgo services or be willing to pay for them. An excellent opportunity is the upcoming vote to add police officers to the LAPD. If the voters defeat the tax, they have no one to blame but themselves for the consequences.
