Primis succeeds Walter E. Mattson, who becomes vice chairman of the board, said the company’s chairman, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger.

Sulzberger said Mattson, 60, and Primis, 46, will also participate in company activities with him as members of a new office of the chairman.
