THOUSAND OAKS : City OKs $300,000 to Speed Construction
The construction of the steel foundation for the civic arts center in Thousand Oaks has been accelerated by four weeks after the City Council this week agreed to give its contractor an extra $300,000.
The council on Tuesday night voted 3 to 1 to increase Maya Steel’s $3.5-million contract in exchange for finishing the job early.
Councilwoman Elois Zeanah said she did not think the time gained was worth the additional money. Councilman Alex Fiore was absent.
Maya Steel will begin construction Oct. 1 rather than Oct. 8 and is scheduled to complete the project by March 17 instead of April 14.
The $63.8-million project to build a new city hall and performing arts center is expected to be finished by October, 1994.
Dennis Carter, a private consultant for the city, recommended the increase in the company’s contract. He said inclement weather could delay the project and that Thousand Oaks would gain valuable time by giving the steel company an incentive.
“In the overall concept of this project, it’s a relatively small amount of money,” Councilwoman Judy Lazar said. “Time is also money.”
