Eastern Ex-Workers to Get Severance Payments: More than 14,000 former Eastern Airlines employees are expected to get severance payments of several thousand dollars apiece under a deal negotiated by a union, the company and creditors. About $97.5 million would be split among the workers employed by Miami-based Eastern when it closed on Jan. 18, 1991. The payouts for most former Eastern pilots, flight attendants and non-contract workers require bankruptcy court approval at a hearing set for October. Most of the money would be paid by the end of the year if the deal is approved. In most cases, the settlements would equal 70% of two weeks’ salary plus 70% of a severance package based on years served. The deal does not include many union employees.
