Trying to fill its riddled administrative ranks, the deficit-plagued Antelope Valley Union High School District has hired a new assistant superintendent for business services and a search firm to help find a permanent new superintendent.

The school board of the 12,835-student district voted 5 to 0 Wednesday night to appoint Con Oamek, former assistant superintendent for business in the Banning Unified School District.

He will earn about $79,000 a year and have a 33-month contract.

The board also hired School Services of California Inc., a Sacramento-based firm, to help recruit a new superintendent by January.

The district’s financial problems led to the departure of Darlene Hinkel, its top business official, early this year and of ex-Supt. Kenneth Brummel in August.
