<i> What to Do on the Weekends</i>

Generations ago, fishermen from the Italian and Dalmatian coasts came to San Pedro to make their living. Since then, the community has absorbed fishermen from other cultures as well, all of them leaving the indelible marks of their cultures on the port community.

This weekend, San Pedro marks the rich history, tradition and contributions of its commercial fishing fleet with a three-day celebration featuring food, arts and crafts, and games for children. Proceeds will go to local charities.

What: San Pedro’s Fishermen’s Fiesta.

When: 6 to 11 p.m. Friday

11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday

11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday

Where: Fishermen’s Slip, Worldport Los Angeles, San Pedro.

Background: The Fishermen’s Fiesta has been a fixture in the San Pedro community since 1945. In addition to the traditional blessing of the commercial fishing fleet, this year the fiesta will also mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World.

Food booths representing different cultures will be featured at the fiesta. A Cioppino Contest will be held on Saturday morning, and for 50 cents visitors can sample the dish, a traditional fishermen’s seafood soup.

Carnival rides, entertainment and other games, and 50 arts and crafts booths are also part of the fiesta this year. The Fisherman’s Fiesta Committee will award scholarships to local high schools totaling $3,000.

Parking: Designated parking area is at 22nd Street and Harbor Boulevard, across from the venue.

Cost: Adults $2, children under 12 admitted free.
