The man known for wearing a colorful wig and hoisting religious placards and who is accused of taking a woman hostage Tuesday at an airport hotel, had contemplated killing President Bush and took steps toward assassinating Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Deputy Dist. Atty. David Conn said that Rollen Frederick Stewart bought a .45-caliber handgun at about the same time as Clinton’s recent visit to Los Angeles. Stewart went to the Bonaventure hotel planning to shoot Clinton, but did not carry out his plan because there was too much security around the candidate, Conn said.

Stewart, a religious fanatic known for donning a rainbow wig and getting in television camera shots at sporting events, was charged Thursday with kidnaping, burglary and other offenses after he held a maid hostage for nine hours Tuesday at a hotel near Los Angeles International Airport.
