CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : RIVERSIDE : Youth in Fatal Chase to Be Tried as Adult

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A 17-year-old driver who led Border Patrol agents on a chase through Temecula on June 2 that ended in six deaths will be tried as an adult, a Riverside Superior Court judge has ruled. The teen-ager, Jesus Sandoval Macias, will be arraigned in Perris today on six counts of murder, and driving without a license. Macias, an undocumented immigrant with no known permanent residence, is being held on $500,000 bail. If convicted on all the charges, he faces a maximum of six consecutive prison terms of 15 years to life. Macias was driving a Chevrolet Suburban utility truck that was pursued by Border Patrol agents who suspected it was being used in the smuggling of illegal aliens. The chase ended in Temecula when the Suburban ran a red light, crashed into a sedan carrying three people and struck a brother and sister walking to school. All were killed, along with one of the 12 people inside the Suburban.
