BOXING AT THE IRVINE MARRIOTT : Armijo Wins; Magdaleno Scores Knockout in 5th

It was a almost a “locals only” night Thursday at the monthly boxing program at the Irvine Marriott.

Orange County fighters were featured in all five bouts and four won, including super-welterweight John Armijo and light-heavyweight Ernie Magdaleno in the co-main events.

Armijo of Huntington Beach won a hard-fought, eight-round decision over Kenny Lopez of San Jose. Armijo, who appeared in trouble in the seventh round, won by scores of 77-74, 77-75 and 76-75.

Armijo (14-5-1) dominated the early rounds before Lopez (17-13) rallied. He was at his best in the seventh when he had Armijo holding on after an assault in the middle of the ring.

Armijo finished the round then dominated the final round to get the decision that was booed by many in the crowd of 1,365.

Magdaleno of Westminster dominated his bout from the outset, scoring a fifth-round knockout against Rodney Stockton of Los Angeles.

Magdaleno won the first four rounds and was leading in the fifth when referee Larry Rozadilla stopped the bout because Stockton (4-9) was no longer defending himself. It was the sixth knockout for Magdaleno (14-0).

On the undercard:

Daniel Dancuta, a heavyweight from Anaheim, took 37 seconds to knock out Craig Brinson of Duarte. Ricky Ramirez, a junior-lightweight from Santa Ana, won a four-round decision over Russell Mosley of San Diego. Middleweight Eddie Guererro of Irvine was knocked out at 1 minute 12 seconds of the first round by Jeff Medley of Upland.
