Migrants’ Housing

Articles regarding the difficult living conditions of immigrant farm workers appear so frequently in the Los Angeles Times that one could be led to believe that their overall financial circumstances are worse than they actually are.

These people are definitely members of the underclass and they are getting by with few luxuries, but some of this is by choice. I think their makeshift shelters in North County leave much to be desired, but when they elect to send most of their earnings home to Mexico, they are implying that things are not all that bad by their standards. I sympathize with them, and I even take them clothes, blankets and food. But, as long as they choose to support relatives in Mexico with dollars that might have gone for rent, I cannot be terribly concerned about their lack of decent housing.

My resources are limited and I must set priorities. Most of my time and money will go to inner-city kids and others who really need help.
