SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Azusa Pacific Gets First Win on Wade’s Kick

Michael Wade’s 45-yard field goal with no time remaining Saturday gave host Azusa Pacific a 34-33 victory over Cal Lutheran.

The Cougars (1-3) took advantage of Cassidy O’Sullivan’s fumble at the Cal Lutheran 42-yard line. After a pair of incomplete passes, Dain Strobel connected with Dan Mitchell on a 14-yard pass on third and 10 that put the ball on the 28. Wade then came on for the winning kick.

Azusa Pacific’s Marcus Slaten, who did not carry the ball the first three games, came off the bench for 107 yards and three scores in 17 attempts. He replaced Shawn Anderson, who left in the first quarter with a leg injury.

O’Sullivan had two touchdowns in a school-record 40 carries for Cal Lutheran (0-2).

Redlands 27, Pomona-Pitzer 7--Sean Cheatham ran for 173 yards and Brian Harmon completed 14 of 20 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns in the victory at Pomona Pitzer.

Central Oklahoma 14, Cal State Northridge 0--Marty Fisher completed five of 19 passes for 37 yards and was intercepted three times at Edmond, Okla,. as the Matadors (2-2) managed only five first downs and 114 yards of offense and were shut out for the first time since Nov. 8, 1987. Central Oklahoma is 4-0.

San Diego 42, Claremont-Mudd 13--Scott Sporrer rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns and Michael Henry and Brian Barr also ran for a pair of scores at San Diego.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 35, Cal State Hayward 3--The Mustangs (2-1) had 535 yards in total offense and held Hayward to a combined 145 to win at San Luis Obispo.

Menlo 34, Whittier 24--Whittier led, 24-14, in the third quarter before losing at Atherton, Calif., and dropping to 0-2. Menlo is 2-1.

Occidental 39, Trinity (Tex.) 0--The Tigers scored two touchdowns in each of the final three quarters at Occidental to improve to 1-1.
