Man Drowns as Kayak Capsizes

Divers found the body of a Lake View Terrace man whose kayak capsized in Castaic Lake Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The body of Noel Tumaliuan, 41, was found shortly after 2:30 in the lower lake of the Castaic Lake Recreation Area, said Deputy Irma Becerra, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.

Tumaliuan had been rowing in a one-person kayak in the lake when the kayak capsized, she said. Tumaliuan, who apparently did not know how to swim, was not wearing a life preserver. Sheriff’s homicide detectives ruled the death accidental, she said.

Divers began searching for the man after his wife saw the accident, which happened about 300 yards offshore shortly before 1 p.m., lake Manager Charles Graham of the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department said. Tumaliuan’s body was found at a depth of 56 feet.

The death was the second this month at the recreation area. Last week, a North Hollywood man drowned in the lake after he stood up in a rowboat and fell into the water.
