SIMI VALLEY : Residents Urged to Clear Tumbleweeds

Share

Simi Valley code enforcement officers have sent notices to about 200 local property owners urging them to clean up tumbleweeds, other vegetation and debris before Oct. 30, city officials said Monday.

Pat Pieres, acting deputy director of environmental services, said the notices were mailed late last week in connection with Simi Valley’s annual tumbleweed abatement program.

The 200 lots were identified in recent weeks by city inspectors, Pieres said. Balls of tumbleweeds, which roll in the wind during autumn, can be a fire and traffic safety hazard.

After Oct. 30, city inspectors will again check the problem sites. If the weeds and debris have not been cleared, the City Council can declare the property a public nuisance, Pieres said.

In such cases, the city usually hires a private contractor to clear the property, then bills the owner. If the owner fails to pay the bill, the funds can be collected through a property tax lien, Pieres said.
