A 21-year-old bicyclist was killed when he collided with an Orange County bus Monday night on Beach Boulevard, authorities said.

The bicyclist, a Huntington Beach resident whose name was not released late Monday, was riding north when he turned into the path of the Orange County Transportation District bus, according to sheriff’s deputies and transportation officials.

The force of the collision knocked the man from the bike and into the path of the bus, which could not stop in time, witnesses and sheriff officials said.

The bus, traveling along Route 29A, was pulling into the middle lane of Beach Boulevard, just north of Lampson Avenue, when the accident occurred, said Kim Donley, who said she was driving near the bus after passing through the intersection.

Sheriff deputies and county bus officials investigating the collision closed two of three lanes of northbound Beach Boulevard, slowing heavy evening traffic for more than two hours along Stanton’s main business thoroughfare.

Deputies had not cited the driver, a 3 1/2-year veteran of the county bus service, pending their continuing investigation, said Sheriff Lt. William Francis.

The bus was carrying more than 40 passengers, said an Orange County Transportation District official at the scene, who requested that his name be withheld.
