Josephine and Jimmy, a pair of African lowland gorillas, slipped out of an unlocked cage Monday at Miami’s Metro Zoo, and one attacked a zookeeper, officials said.

A worker had forgotten to lock the cage, a zoo official said. Jimmy, a 26-year-old silverback gorilla who weighs about 400 pounds, apparently became frightened and bit zookeeper Kurt Mannchen on his left leg and on each hand. He and his mate, Josephine, were rounded up in less than an hour.

The zoo has been closed since Hurricane Andrew ripped through on Aug. 24.
