Tritons Decide to Keep Athletics at Division III Level in NCAA

UC San Diego, perhaps the most successful Division III member in the NCAA, will remain a Division III member, UCSD Athletic Director Judith Sweet announced Monday, putting aside for now the temptation to move to Division II.

Because of scheduling difficulties and the lack of conference opportunities in Division III, UCSD began an evaluation process of possible movement two years ago. The study was conducted by the Intercollegiate and Recreational Athletics Advisory Committee (IRAAC), which is represented by UCSD students, faculty and staff.

“This has been a long thorough process in which IRAAC has carefully considered all of the ramifications of our staying in Division III versus a move to Division II,” Sweet said in press release. “While the findings indicate there could be some benefits derived from a change in divisional status, the present economic climate is not conducive to a change in divisional affiliation. Further consideration of a change will be placed in abeyance at this time.

“Hopefully, we will be able to reopen discussions on the next level of development of the athletic program in a healthier fiscal climate in the not too distant future.”

UCSD, which sponsors 23 sports, is a non-scholarship independent entity.
