AIDS Drug Patent Suit Filed: Burroughs Wellcome Co. said it filed suit charging that Novopharm Inc. is infringing on its patent for the drug AZT, a major weapon in the fight against AIDS. Novopharm said in August that it was seeking fast-track approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market a generic version of AZT, which Burroughs Wellcome markets under the brand name Retrovir. The lawsuit is another attempt by Burroughs Wellcome, the Research Triangle Park, N.C.-based unit of London-based health care conglomerate Wellcome, to maintain exclusive rights to AZT, which makes up 12% of its sales.
