Bazaar Bustles With Fun

With names such as Mud People and Fiber Group on the bill, you might expect to hear screaming guitar riffs rising from the greens around Cal State Fullerton’s visual arts complex at this Saturday’s Bazaar dell’Arte.

Instead, this family event focuses on the quieter arts, featuring demonstrations by ceramists and weavers (or, as they prefer, mud people and fiber group), as well as American folk songs and a sampling of Italian commedia dell’arte.

Sponsored by the CSUF Art Alliance, with proceeds going toward scholarships for university art students, Bazaar dell’Arte replaces last year’s successful Festa dell’Arte, an Italian-themed street painting festival that had to be postponed due to lack of corporate underwriting, said event spokeswoman Lee Carlson. (That festa may return next year if economic conditions improve, she said.)

In the meantime, Bazaar dell’Arte will continue the Festa spirit with a 7-foot-by-8-foot street painting created by Orange resident Carol Adamo.

More than 50 visual artists from the community will display and sell their works, and a variety of antiques and collectibles will be sold. Visitors inspired to try their hand at the arts can pay a small fee to work alongside muralist Janice DeLoof on a large, multimedia work.

Performing at the event will be the Dell’Arte Players Company and folk singer Juliana Cole. A touring company based in Northern California, the Dell’Arte Players will present 45-minute excerpts from their commedia dell’arte show “Punch!” at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. (The full show has its Southland premiere Saturday evening as part of CSUF’s performing artists series.)

Cole will lead audiences in American traditional tunes following both shows.
