Poet-Activist to Perform

Share

Indian rights activist John Trudell will vent his spleen most eloquently when he offers a spoken-word performance Wednesday at the Insomniac Coffeehouse in Ventura. The show begins at 8 p.m. Cost for the program at the Mayfair Theatre, 793 Santa Clara St., is $4.

Trudell, a Santee Sioux, was born in Omaha and has been writing poetry since 1979. He turned to poetry as a form of therapy after the death of his wife, children and mother-in-law in a fire. Trudell was spokesman for the Indians of All Tribes Occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1970-71 and national chairman of the American Indian Movement from 1973-79. The FBI, according to a press release by Rykodisc Records, took enough notes on AIM for a 17,000-page file.
