THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE : Biker Chic

When Irving Schott designed the Perfecto leather jacket for a Harley-Davidson dealer in 1927, he didn’t know it would become a classic. Wild One Marlon Brando made the style more than a biker accessory. Now designers from DKNY to Dolce & Gabbana are knocking off the trademark shape in wool, satin and velvet. “We went with the original,” says Esprit spokeswoman Cassie Hughes, “and it’s one of the hottest jackets of the season.”

Hey, Imelda!

There’s no place like . . . the Odyssey Gallery in Fashion Island Newport Beach. That’s where a replica of Judy Garland’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” sell for $8,500. “Some day they’ll be a nice investment,” says a gallery spokeswoman. Who knows? An original pair sold at auction four years ago for $165,000 and are now supposedly worth $1 million. The limited-edition red-sequin dupes were made by the same company that did the original five pairs for the 1939 film.

Wiggin’ Out

Forget gelatin capsules. The easiest way to long tresses is a trip to the neighborhood wig shop. No need to be shy; fake braids, chignons, curls and whole wigs are the rage from the catwalks to the nightclubs this year. “It’s the new fashion accessory,” says J.R. of Carlton Hair International in Irvine. No need worrying about your hair at any certain length. With faux locks “you can have it all.” For a real style statement, add a piece that contrasts with the rest of your hair color.

Minnesota jewelry designer Nancy Grist “wanted to do something that wasn’t cliche.” Her answer? Torq Zipper Pulz, a utilitarian-inspired line of zipper jewelry. Sturdy stainless steel shapes of saw blades, abstract forms and zodiac signs are a hit among work-wear trendies. But one size does not fit all, so Grist designed one for heavy-jacket zips, another for clothes and purses.
