It was business as usual for the No. 1 team in the county Friday night as Esperanza defeated Long Beach Jordan, 51-0, at Valencia High.

Bill Ross led the way for the Aztecs, rushing 10 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. Garrett Campbell also had a big night in relief of starting quarterback John Aed. Campbell completed three of six passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns.

Ross scored on touchdown runs of two, 46, and five yards, helping Esperanza to a 30-0 halftime lead. The Aztecs have outscored their last two opponents, 107-14.

Still, Esperanza Coach Gary Meek wasn’t particularly excited about his team’s offensive performance.

“It was a very sloppily played game,” Meek said. “I wasn’t happy with the penalties or the turnovers.”

The Aztecs (4-0) were penalized 10 times for 109 yards and turned the ball over three times on two interceptions and a fumble.

The Esperanza defense, however, didn’t allow Jordan to take advantage of the mistakes.

The Aztecs sacked Jordan quarterback Joe Rodriguez three times and forced seven turnovers in the game. Jordan (0-4) managed just 34 yards in total offense.
