Sutro & Co. said Joseph M. Smith has been named vice president for investments at the securities firm’s Westlake Village office.

Smith formerly was a securities broker at Merrill Lynch & Co.’s Westlake Village branch. Sutro is a San Francisco-based unit of insurance giant John Hancock.
