Carless in L.A.

Anent, “Surviving Without Driving” (Sept. 23), I add a further note to the plight of the carless: In the 49 years that I have been here, many changes have occurred; to own an auto is now seen as crucial. One example: As I waited for a cab, early one Sunday morning, the area was deserted. A car pulled up to the curb and a sweet, old lady daintily proffered a bag of food to me. Smilingly, I refused. Years ago that scene would be unknown. Welcome to the ‘90s.
