Ventura : Councilman to Serve as Link to Port Panel

Share

Ventura City Councilman Tom Buford has been appointed to act as a liaison between the City Council and the Ventura Port District.

“The council would like to promote cooperation and communication,” Buford said.

The port district is a government agency that acts separately from the City Council, and Buford’s appointment will not change that.

The five-member port commission is appointed by the City Council.

Buford said he does not know precisely what he will be doing, but that he expects to learn more about the port district and report back to the council.

Buford’s appointment came shortly after the City Council passed a resolution Monday calling for the resignation of Ventura Port Commissioner Robert (Nick) Starr because he did not disclose his role in a 24-year-old bribery case when he was appointed by the council.

“I think everyone knows the port district has been a rocky road for the city of Ventura,” Buford said.

“I don’t think that adding one more ingredient to the stew really spoils it.”
