Best Pal blew past a potbellied pig, a camel and a sheep in the run for the title of Ramona town mascot.

The 4-year-old thoroughbred clinched victory for a two-year term, not in a road race but by garnering 607 votes, which cost $1 each to cast in a benefit for Ramona Town Hall.

But the second-place finisher may get all the glory.

Because Best Pal is too valuable to make frequent public appearances, first runner-up Kiss Me Kate, a Vietnamese potbellied pig, will take over those duties at ribbon-cuttings and groundbreakings.

“She’s gloating over that,” said owner Jeanne Cannon.

“After all, she is kind of a ham.”

Kiss Me Kate received 159 votes, trailed by Elvis the camel, Stormy the Amazing Wonder Sheep and several canine candidates at the back of the pack.

The contest, which began in February and ended Sunday, raised $777 for maintenance and operation of the town hall, city officials said.
