Divers searching for homemade hand grenades that a man claimed to have dumped in the ocean off Portuguese Bend found materials used to make such explosives, but no whole grenades, officials said Thursday.

Acting on a tip from the Los Angeles Police Department’s criminal conspiracy section, deputies arrested Robert R. Evans, 33, late Wednesday night outside his home in an unincorporated area just east of Torrance, sheriff’s spokeswoman Diane Hecht said.

The deputies searched the house and found 14 rifles and handguns, including an AK-47 assault rifle, Hecht said. During questioning, Evans said he had dumped about a dozen homemade grenades Wednesday afternoon in the ocean off Inspiration Point on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Divers searching the area Thursday morning found pipe, fuse, plastic end caps, spoons and pins that would be used in the production of hand grenades, Hecht said, but no grenade casings.

Evans was being held in Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail, Hecht said. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Compton Municipal Court today.
