WEEKEND TV : Debate Over Debates Tops News Shows

The presidential debates--the first of which will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. and shown on CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, CNN and C-SPAN--will be the main topic of discussion on the weekend’s talk and news programs.

Also, the first debate between California’s two-year U.S. Senate candidates--Republican Sen. John Seymour and his Democratic challenger Dianne Feinstein--will be held today. Live coverage begins at 6 p.m. on KNBC-TV Channel 4, KWHY-TV Channel 22 in Spanish and KSCI-TV Channel 18 in Korean.

CNN’s “Evans and Novak” begins the presidential debate countdown with appearances by President Bush’s campaign co-chairman, Rep. Vin Weber (R-Minn.), and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) today, 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., “The McLaughlin Group” will present a presidential debate preview and a discussion of Ross Perot’s economic recovery plan.

On Sunday, Charles Black, Bush’s senior campaign adviser, and James Carville, Gov. Bill Clinton’s senior campaign strategist, will be interviewed on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” 7 a.m. (4)(39); 8 a.m. (36).

CNN’s Bernard Shaw will anchor “The Battle to Lead: A Heartbeat Away,” a look at the credentials of Vice President Dan Quayle and Democratic nominee Sen. Al Gore, Sunday at 7 p.m.
