SOUTH LOS ANGELES : Center’s Carwash Jobs Train Youths

Share

The People Who Care Youth Center is providing 14- to 19-year-olds with weekend carwashing jobs. The center, 1504 Slauson Ave., contracts with block clubs and other neighborhood organizations to provide youths with job experience and a first-time income.

“We emphasize job training and customer relations,” said project coordinator Medgar Parrish. “It teaches kids self-sufficiency and people skills at an early age. And they learn to handle themselves on the job.”

Parrish said that the service is more convenient than traditional carwashes because workers go to the owners’ homes and wash cars at their convenience.

Workers are paid $4.25 an hour. Although maintaining an efficient work force is important, Parrish said, the program’s success depends largely on community participation.

“We need the support of the people,” he said. “This is definitely a cooperative effort among all of us to provide jobs for our kids.”
