Trevor Cobb rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns in 33 carries and quarterback Bert Emanuel also ran for two touchdowns as Rice took advantage of five Southern Methodist turnovers and beat the Mustangs, 28-13, Saturday at Houston.

Rice, 2-3 overall, evened its Southwest Conference record at 1-1 in beating SMU for the fourth consecutive year. SMU dropped to 3-3 and 1-2.

SMU played without 10 players, including six defensive players and leading rusher Kevin Shepard, who sat out the game as part of an NCAA-mandated sanction for reselling textbooks bought with scholarship money.

Emanuel couldn’t ignite Rice’s passing game, but the Owls didn’t need it as Cobb registered his sixth 200-yard performance. Emanuel finished with 109 yards in 21 carries.

Baylor 41, Texas Christian 20--Defensive back Keith Caldwell picked up a fumble and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown to spark the Bears (3-3, 2-1) over the Horned Frogs (1-3-1, 0-2) at Ft. Worth.

Caldwell’s big play came with 1:10 left in the third quarter with the Frogs threatening to erase a 20-17 deficit after achieving a first down at the Baylor nine.

Fullback Robert Strait added a six-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Baylor quarterback J.J. Joe completed 16 of 25 passes for three touchdowns, but threw three interceptions to keep the Frogs in the game until late in the third quarter.
