A 28-year-old Santa Ana man was arrested after he allegedly jumped in the back of a pickup and ordered the occupant to drive off, Costa Mesa police said Sunday.

Todd Clark Evans was arrested Saturday after he allegedly pushed out the driver and took off, then drove the pickup into the Santa Ana River bed near Victoria Street, a police spokesman said.

Police said Andrew Wroclawsky, 17, of Santa Ana was driving north about 1 p.m. on Bristol Street near Anton Boulevard when Evans jumped into the back of his truck.

Police said Evans gave Wroclawsky specific directions on which route to take. During the incident, Evans also told Wroclawsky that someone was trying to kill him, police said.

When Wroclawsky stopped his truck at Euclid Avenue and the San Diego Freeway, Evans pushed him out and sped off but later drove in to the river bed, where the truck got stuck. Evans was detained by nearby construction workers before he was taken into custody by police.

Bail was set at $50,000.
