A 22-year-old woman was critically wounded in North Hollywood on Sunday when she was shot in the head while riding in a car on the Ventura Freeway, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway near Vineland Avenue, California Highway Patrol officials said. It was not clear if the woman was the driver or a passenger in the car.

The car exited the freeway and stopped at the corner of Magnolia Boulevard and Bakman Avenue, where the occupants summoned authorities, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Mike Little said.

The woman was first taken to Medical Center of North Hollywood, where she was listed in critical condition. She was later flown to County-USC Medical Center, police said.

A traffic accident that occurred shortly afterward near the shooting site was being investigated because a car matching the description of the attackers’ vehicle was involved in the collision, police said.
