Oceanside’s Black Shares Title in Wheelchair Tennis

Jim Black of Oceanside and Monique van den Bosch of Holland won the masters mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships Sunday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

Black and van den Bosch beat Michael Foulks (La Jolla) and Chantal Vandierendonck (Holland), 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier Sunday in the semifinals, Black and van den Bosch had beaten Dan Lachman (Corona del Mar) and Nancy Olson (Stony Point, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-0.

Wayne Leavitt (Carrollton, Tex.) and Rick Amber (Dallas) rallied to take the men’s doubles title with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over John Johnston (Gainesville, Fla.) and Bruce Karr (Boynton Beach, Fla.).

The tournament is the largest of its kind, with a field of 235 players from 16 countries. Play continues through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

John Johnston (Gainesville, Fla.)-Bruce Karr (Boynton Beach, Fla.) d. Barry Butler (Canada)-Chris Illingsworth (Great Britain), 6-4, 6-3. Final--Leavitt-Amber d. Johnson-Karr, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

MIXED DOUBLES semifinals--Jim Black (Oceanside)-Monique van den Bosch (Holland) d. Dan Lachman (Corona del Mar)-Nancy Olson (Stony Point, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-0.
