U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team Defeated

The U.S. men’s national volleyball team lost its third consecutive match Sunday, dropping a 15-12, 10-15, 15-4, 15-10 decision to Japan in Osaka, Japan. Bob Samuelson, the only remaining starter off the Olympic bronze medal squad, had a match-high 38 kills and two blocks.
The two teams will play again Tuesday in Houston.
MEN’S SOCCER
San Diego State spotted UC Santa Barbara a goal three minutes into the game then came back to win, 3-1, in front of 333 at Herder Stadium in Santa Barbara. After SDSU allowed the early goal to Mark Coulter, Willie Franklin tied the game at the 34-minute mark, 1-1, then goals by Bill Demke (63rd minute) and Andy Morrone (79th) helped the Aztecs improve to 5-4-1. The Gauchos are 2-7-0.
Doug Barry scored a pair of goals, his sixth and seventh of the season, to start a 6-0 rout by the University of San Diego over host Loyola Marymount. The Toreros (9-3-0) then got goals from Alex Streicek, Scott Farley (the first of the season for both), Manny Rodriguez and Chugger Adair as they won their third game in a row and improved to 2-0 in the West Coast Conference. Loyola fell to 2-8-2, 0-2-0.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
SDSU could not hold a one-goal lead in the second overtime period and settled for a 2-2 tie with Colorado College at SDSU. Kim Komara scored for the Aztecs at the 106:18 mark of the second overtime, after a scoreless first overtime. But with 2:28 to go, Katie Shenk scored with a penalty kick to tie it. SDSU is 5-4-2, Colorado 7-1-2.
MEN’S TENNIS
Fredrik Axsater of USD defeated Nils Koitka, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), in the consolation final of the ITA West Coast Fall Championships at the Warner Center Club in Thousand Oaks.
