Co-owner Sidney Craig said Tuesday that he will pay the $200,000 supplementary fee that will enable Paseana to run in the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Gulfstream Park on Oct. 31.

Craig and his wife, Jenny, also plan to run Exchange in the Distaff. She and Paseana will be coupled in the betting.

Victory in the Distaff is worth $520,000 and the second-place finisher receives $200,000. Exchange is eligible for the race, but the Craigs must pay the supplementary fee for Paseana because neither the mare nor her sire is a Breeders’ Cup eligible.

Paseana won her first six starts this season and was considered a horse-of-the-year candidate, but was fifth against males in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. In the Spinster Stakes on Sunday at Keeneland, Paseana was second, 2 1/4 lengths behind Fowda.

“We owe it to Paseana to let her run in the Distaff,” Sidney Craig said. “She still has a little bit of a chance to be horse of the year. She’s entitled to another chance.”

The Craigs plan to run two other horses--Dr Devious and Bistro Garden--in Breeders’ Cup grass races on Oct. 31, although Bistro Garden might not qualify if the $1-million Mile is oversubscribed. Fields for Breeders’ Cup races are limited to 14 horses.

Bistro Garden, co-owned by his breeder, Ross Gilbert, won the Bay Meadows Derby and was a stakes winner in France.

Dr Devious is scheduled to run in the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Turf. After running seventh in this year’s Kentucky Derby, Dr Devious returned to Europe and won the Epsom Derby.

In his last race, the Arc de Triomphe near Paris, Dr Devious ran sixth and suffered several cuts on his hind legs. After the Arc, there were reports that Dr Devious would be rested and run in the $2.9-million Japan Cup in Tokyo on Nov. 29. Sidney Craig said Tuesday that Dr Devious might run in both the Breeders’ Cup and the Japan Cup.
