Lynwood : Bilingual Teacher Training Program to Begin Tuesday
Teachers in the Lynwood Unified School District will be able to study Spanish and get bilingual certificates at a local program sponsored by Mexico’s University of Guadalajara, the school board decided Tuesday.
The classes will be held at Hosler Junior High School beginning Tuesday, and will be taught by the university’s Mexican Cultural Institute of Los Angeles.
“They have a specially designed program for teachers working in the Los Angeles area,” said Cheryl M. White, director of federal and state programs at the district.
A survey of Lynwood teachers in April showed a need for 153 teachers trained to help students with a limited knowledge of English, White said. Training in previous years was done by the county Office of Education.
The session that begins Tuesday will end Dec. 15. Another session will run from Feb. 9 to April 1. Both programs will cost the school district $8,000 and will be funded with federal money, White said.
