LOS ANGELES : Council OKs Restrictions on Opening Gun Shops
- Share via
An ordinance that places new restrictions on the construction of gun stores won final approval from the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday.
By a 12-1 vote, the council approved a law that requires public hearings before permits are issued for new gun shops. Officials will be able to consider the concentration of such stores in a neighborhood and to deny permits or impose limits, for example, on store hours or the sales of single bullets.
Councilman Hal Bernson cast the lone no vote, calling the law a “gross overreaction” that would impede law-abiding citizens who want to own guns.
The ordinance was proposed in 1989 and revived after the riots last spring, when some gun stores were looted.
