Texans Cast Ballots in Early Voting
Gov. Ann Richards voted for Bill Clinton at an East Austin grocery store on Wednesday, Texas’ first day of early voting for the Nov. 3 general election.
Democrats planned a strong push to increase early voting in Texas, highlighted by rallies across the state.
“Our goal is to have 1.75 million votes cast during the early voting period,” said Kirk Adams, director of Unity ‘92, Texas’ coordinated campaign for Democrats.
Republicans planned to concentrate on a “massive phone bank operation” to get out the vote, said Mark Sanders, spokesman for Victory ‘92, the state’s GOP election effort.
Texas voters may cast their ballots in person from now until Friday, Oct. 30. Besides the traditional polling locations as well as a number of retail stores, Texans may use mobile early-voting sites operating out of motor homes and station wagons, according to Texas Secretary of State John Hannah’s office.
Early voting has already begun in Colorado, another state that permits voting before Election Day. Early voting is not new in Texas, but the state has been pushing public awareness of it since 1988.
