A father and son from Carlsbad were killed when their experimental airplane crashed in southeastern Kern County, authorities reported Thursday.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified them as John D. Gilbert, 68, and Dennis B. Gilbert, 36. It was uncertain which victim was piloting the homemade, Swearingen SX-300 when it crashed into a field Wednesday afternoon near Rosamond Airport.

The plane reportedly took off from Palomar Airport in Carlsbad. The Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the cause of the crash.
